Ince Moss 7ft mine

Started by: orrellite (2427)

Coming up to 100yrs since my grandad, someone I never knew, was killed in a roof fall in the above pit. He was a timber man it happened on the Friday inquest returned a verdict of misadventure on the following Monday being the risk of the job. Clearly a lengthy investigation.
His service in the mines rescue team counted for nothing no mention being made either by the mine owner or the Dep Coroner..
Thankfully those days are no more.

In the bad old days it was common for a coal miner to be killed every day. Work did not stop and labour was cheap

Absolutely Peter, work did not stop and he was taken to his home , having been pronounced dead at the mine, through the streets of Ince on a simple cart. So disgusted and furious at his treatment that grandma withdrew their sons from the mines and no other member of my paternal family ever went down the mines again.

Many years ago I was a instructor at Old Boston/Bold and one day I was showing Apprentice Elect/ Fitters how to lash on and how to scotch tubs. I stressed that they should never get any part of their body between tubs in case the tubs moved and crushed them(taken with a pinch of salt). A few months past and then I got word a Elect had been crushed between two tubs and would take a long time for him to recover. After a examination of the accident site the blood was washed off the tub and then it was put back into use
